Combermere Abbey Cottages & Location:

Set in a vast old English estate with stunning scenery at every turn, the 5-star cottages at Combermere are an ideal country getaway. Located about six miles south of Nantwich on the Cheshire-Shropshire border.

There are nine immaculately decorated self-catering cottages. They have been thoughtfully converted from a beautiful 19th-century square stable yard, with a central cobbled courtyard.

The location is pretty inspiring and being at end of a mile-long drive there is peaceful seclusion that is quite literally a breath of fresh air if you’re used to the city.

Outside there are acres of space to wander around. With a beautifully formal walled garden, woods to traipse through and lakeside walks.

Sleeps:

We stayed in The Stapleton – a two bedroom cottage with large twin room downstairs with en-suite shower room.

And a double bedroom upstairs with an en-suite bathroom.

The cottage has a full-height open plan living area which shows off lovely old oak beams. The owners have made clever use of the original stable dividers to separate the kitchen from the living area.

There is a rear entrance into a little private garden with tables and chairs which leads towards the walled garden and the woods behind.

Despite having other cottages on either side, we didn’t hear a peep from anyone.

Inside has a wonderful homely feel, but with little touches everywhere which made it feel all the more luxurious. Dualit toaster, original artwork, Jane Churchill fabrics, fresh coffee and more besides.

The kitchen is stocked with every utensil you could need, and rather wonderfully there was not a hint of those cheap bendy knives that seem so prevalent in self-catering cottages; rather a sturdy set of cooks knives.

A dishwasher was also very welcome.

Food:

Being self-catering we brought much of our own food, but there is a “shop” on site where you can get a few essentials as well as frozen meals which works on an honesty basis.

The estate office can arrange for supper for you should you wish, and they also have a selection of hampers you can buy.

Hamper from Combermere

We recommend the breakfast hamper which contained the most delicious local sausages and bacon, fresh bread, eggs, mushrooms and Combermere’s home-grown apple juice. All of this went into making a rather enormous breakfast on Saturday morning.

The best bits of Combermere Abbey Cottages:

This place is wonderfully relaxing, and once you’ve re-charged enough inside, nature seems to call you outside.

The Pleasure Garden is a large area beside the Walled garden with loads of mature oak and beech trees. The children loved simply exploring here.

The gardens at Combermere

There is also a children’s wagon hidden in the forest with swings and a dressing-up box.

The gardens at Combermere

Some of the big trees had fallen in the storms but are perfect for children to climb. The lakeside is pretty magical and you could sit for ages just taking it all in.

We also love the fact that Comberemere keeps its mid-week prices at the same rate for 50 weeks of the year. So it’s a great price for summer stays.

Worth Bearing in Mind:

The lake is not fenced off so if you have small children you may wish to keep a closer eye on them. But it’s a fair way from the cottage so there’s no need to worry about taking your eyes off them while you’re in the cottage.

Child friendly

Absolutely. There are high chairs and cots available at no extra charge but you must pre-book.

Having pre-warned the office, we arrived to find the travel cot already set up.

The cottage comes with children’s cutlery, so you don’t need to bring any of this with you.
